Papillon: Index

The Papillon is a very intelligent toy-sized dog that was used as a lap dog for centuries by the French and Spanish royalty. Since the 1300's the Papillon has been in its 2 current forms. The Papillon variant has butterfly-shaped ears (Papillon means butterfly in French), and the Phalene variant (still the same dog) has ears that hang by the side of its head. The AKC considers both the Papillon and the Phalene to be the same dog, just that the two are different variants. Some other regulatory bodies consider these two as completely different dogs.
